Nicki Minaj Dedicates ‘Anaconda’ Performance to Donald Trump + Joe Biden
As one of the six celebrities chosen to cover TIME’s current 100 Most Influential People issue, it makes sense that Nicki Minaj performed during last night’s (April 26) New York City gala, meant to celebrate the magazine's honorees. It makes less sense that Minaj dedicated her “Anaconda” performance to both GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump and current VP Joe Biden.
Here’s the (apparent) backstory: Trump — also included on TIME’s extensive list of influencers — walked the event’s pre-show red carpet, where he was asked by Access Hollywood if he was a Nicki Minaj fan. He reportedly told the outlet that he thought she was “terrific,” according to NME.
News of Trump's praise must have spread quickly to Minaj, who preceded her “Anaconda” performance with the following statement: “I’m very political and I would like to dedicate a song in the spirit of unity to Joe Biden and Donald Trump.”
She then followed it up by asking the crowd, “Do you think they like that song? Who do you think likes the biggest butts? Donald Trump or Joe Biden? Trump?”
But politics were not the overarching theme of her set, as Minaj stuck largely with her familiar brand of female empowerment instead. At one point, reports TIME, she told the room, "If you don’t need a man to buy you a car or a house, make some mother-f—ing noise."
Minaj landed on TIME's list of 100 Most Influential People among other celebrities like Adele, Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar and more. Check out the full list over at TIME's official website, and see clips from Minaj's performance above.
