Things That East Texans Get Asked By ‘Out-Of-Towners’

Being from East Texas, I’ve gotten all kinds of questions about where I’m from. I mean, yes, there are always the stereotypical ones that Texans get asked, like, “Did you guys ride horses to school,” or, “Is everyone a cowboy?” But, I’ve received some others as well. Some that made me laugh, some that confused me, and some that . . . well, I’m not sure what I thought of them.

Probably the most common one that I’ve heard, especially when I was telling people that I would be going to college at Stephen F. Austin, was, “Nac…Nac-cog…how do you pronounce that?” At that point I would have to tell them, “Nac – uh – dough – chess. The ‘g’ is silent.” This was the point that they would look at me like I was the crazy one.

Another one was, “Nacogdoches? Isn’t that a town in Louisiana?” After this question, I would generally have to explain that, “No, the town you’re thinking of is Natchitoches. Two ENTIRELY different cities.” Sometimes, I’d even add a little pick-me-up after that sentence, something like, “You were close, though!”

And then there’s always the question of, “Your high school was HOW SMALL???” Exactly like that, with the exact same emphasis on the final two words. You see, I graduated in a class of 35. Not quite the size of your Houston or Dallas schools. Of course, they were generally even more blown away when I told them that the town size was only 850.

And these are just a few of the dozens of questions I got. What are some of yours? Let us know in the comments below.

Seriously … Let us know what crazy things you’ve been asked and we may use it in a future article.
