The musical romantic drama, which is based on a classic Hollywood film, tells the story of Jackson Maine, a grizzled country star (played by Bradley Cooper) who falls in love with a rising singer named Ally (Gaga), all while trying to help the struggling musician launch a music career — but as Ally's star rises and Jackson continues to face his demons, their romance begins to unravel.
Even before its wide theatrical release, the film is being hailed by critics, especially for Gaga's standout performance and Cooper's deft direction. Clint Eastwood was originally in talks to direct Beyonce in the film as far back as 2011, but in 2015, Warner Bros. announced that Cooper would make his directorial debut with the film, as well as star in it.
The pop star previously starred in two seasons of American Horror Story, as well as appeared in Machete Kills (2014) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).
The original Academy Award-winning film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March was the first Technicolor film for both actors.
A Star Is Born (2018) follows 1954's musical starring Judy Garland and the 1976 rock film starring Barbra Streisand.
Principal photography took place at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California in April 2017.
During the Tribeca Film Festival back in April, Cooper revealed that Gaga encouraged the actor to sing live for the film, sharing, "It was terrifying, and I really relied on her. I spent about a year and a half taking vocal lessons and preparing."
In early September, Halsey revealed on Twitter that she makes a cameo in the film, tweeting, "Thank you so so much to Gaga and Bradley for including me. It was an honor to watch both of your talent and dedication on set. An all-time life highlight for me for sure."
The film premiered in Venice on August 31, with both an early morning press screening as well as an evening red carpet premiere.
Variety called the film "a transcendent Hollywood movie."
